Job Description

Main Purpose of the Job

Establish commercialisation strategies and support the development of an entrepreneurial culture within the Institute. The role will drive the Quadram Institute Bioscience commercialisation agenda ensuring that IP is used to the highest possible impact maximising the Institute income potential. Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB) aims to be a world class leader driving innovative global research into food and health.

Key Relationships

A key part of this role will be building highly effective and collaborative relationships with commercial industry partners and funding UK and overseas funding bodies. This can include LEP, Research Councils, Charities, Innovate UK, the EU and other overseas funders.

Main Activities & Responsibilities

Establish and maintain effective and productive relationships with the QIB research community to stimulate awareness of IP issues and commercial opportunities, and to encourage an innovative and entrepreneurial culture within the Institute.

Devise and recommend commercialisation strategies to the IP management committee including deciding on whether to commercialise via licensing to an existing company or through formation of a new spin out company or whether to recommend further internal research and development (e.g. through translational funding or in collaboration with a commercial partner) before active commercialisation. Resource, implement, monitor and modify this commercialisation plan according to the changing commercial environment.

Initiate contact with external organisations (industry, venture capital organisations, angel networks) at senior level to identify appropriate partners for technology transfer or collaboration.

Facilitate visits to the QIB by investors, companies and Government agencies.

Liaise with colleagues in the Business Development Team and with Senior management at QIB to contribute to the development of good practice in commercialisation of the Institute IP.

Work with the Contracts department and external IP providers to review and draft relevant agreements including NDAs as well as collaboration, consultancy and licence agreements.

Support the writing of business plans and presentations to secure development funding and investment from investors, translational funders and industry.

Participate when required in communications programme to increase awareness of, interest in and demand for IP commercialisation, including staff development.

Produce appropriate reports and data analysis, covering external funding applications and associated intellectual property rights etc. to inform management on a regular basis.

Commercialisation Manager

Applications are invited for a Commercialisation Manager to join the Business Development Group at the Quadram Institute Bioscience (QIB), based in Norwich, UK.

Background:

The Quadram Institute is a new interdisciplinary research institute at the forefront of a new era in food and health research. Its mission is to understand how food and the gut microbiota are linked to the promotion of health and the prevention of disease. A partnership between Quadram Institute Bioscience, the University of East Anglia, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and BBSRC, it brings together scientists and clinicians in a new state-of-the-art building. The Quadram Institute is based on the Norwich Research Park, one of Europe’s largest centres of life sciences and home of the John Innes Centre and The Earlham Institute. (https://quadram.ac.uk/).

The role:

The main purpose of the Commercialisation Manager post will be to establish commercialisation strategies and support the development of an entrepreneurial culture within the Institute. The role will drive the QIB’s commercialisation agenda ensuring that intellectual property is used to the highest possible impact maximising the QIB’s income potential. This will be achieved by developing and sustaining extensive corporate research collaborations and opportunities to co-innovate with commercial organisations both across the UK and Globally.

The ideal candidate:

This role provides an opportunity for a commercially focussed individual with highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills, to apply and develop their commercial collaboration skills in a unique national and international marketplace. Candidates should have a post graduate level qualification in a relevant scientific discipline, however applicants with significant laboratory experience in a commercially focused R&D department will also be considered. Candidates must have experience in working with researchers to find commercial routes to market for technology/IP and have successfully led the commercialisation/implementation of technology or IP. Knowledge and direct experience of the patent system, working with patent agents and recording information for management purposes are essential requirements as is extensive experience of initiating, planning and managing major projects. Candidates must also be able to travel extensively both within and outside of the UK.
